Malibu : Bids for Equestrian Park

Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation plans to start taking contractors’ bids this week for the first phase of a controversial $2.5-million equestrian park in Malibu.

A joint project of the county, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, the park will be on school board property next to Malibu Park Junior High School.

Construction of phase one is scheduled to begin Oct. 1 and will take about 10 months, according to county park officials. Included is grading, utility installation, and construction of barbecue pits and a picnic area.

The park has been on the drawing board for almost a decade. It has been held up partly because of community opposition to its site and design. “I think it would have been easier to put a cruise missile in Malibu than it has been to build this park,” said William Reynolds, who has been lobbying since 1980 to get the center approved and financed.

Reynolds is vice president of a local equestrian group, Trancas Riders and Ropers, which will be one of the main users of the county regional facility.
