The husband-wife owners of a trash-hauling company who ignored four years’ worth of citations for serious mechanical defects on their fleet of garbage trucks have been charged with 22 additional misdemeanors, prosecutors said Friday.

Alfred Banuelos, 61, and his wife, Elsie Banuelos, 58, the owners of AB Rubbish Disposal Services in West Los Angeles, were charged June 15 by the city attorney’s office with six misdemeanor violations. Late Thursday, the couple was charged with 22 additional misdemeanors stemming from inspections conducted at the company by the California Highway Patrol July 22 and July 25.

Mechanical problems found during the inspections included defective brakes, steering and exhaust systems and inoperable headlights, turn signals, windshield wipers and back-up alarms, said Deputy City Atty. Don Cocek. If convicted, the defendants could be sentenced to a year in County Jail and fined $1,000 for each charge.
