An Irvine consulting firm will help Ventura businesses develop child-care services for their employees for a second year.

The Ventura City Council agreed earlier this week to again hire Child Care Planning Associates for the three-year project.

The firm is coordinating design and implementation of child-care programs for 18 area businesses. Potential services include on-site child care, developing a network of trained home-care specialists and educating parents on how to find quality care. Organizers hope to narrow their options in the next three months, said project coordinator Ellen Coleman.

The city will pay as much as $44,250 to the firm this year, which is 75% of the amount needed, Coleman said. The additional 25% will be raised through membership fees and payments for child-care services, she said.

The project was begun last year with a $25,000 grant from the State Department of Education and a matching grant from the city. All $50,000 of the funds were used.

Of the 18 businesses taking part in the project, four have joined in the last month. These are Ventura Unified School District, Buenaventura Medical Clinic, Kinko’s Copies, and Mervyn’s Department Stores.
