Linking Aid to Population Growth
I must congratulate Beilenson on his insightful article. I do, however, take exception to his pointing the finger at Third World populations exclusively as the largest factor in human overpopulation. The United States could well set an example for other nations by limiting our own population growth.
Our tax system rewards births with tax deductions; our religious organizations not only encourage more births, they step in to deny a woman’s right to choice and push the legislature to agree with them. Our economic system is built on baby-booming. Our own pollution and waste-disposal problems are directly linked to overpopulation.
A commitment to limited birth takes intelligence and courage, not just in Third World countries but everywhere on our fragile planet Earth.
