1-Year-Old Dies After Father Backs Over Him

A 1-year-old boy playing in the driveway of his Pacoima home died after his father accidentally backed over him in the family car, authorities said Sunday.

Jesus Bugarin died about an hour after his head was crushed beneath the left rear wheel of the car Saturday night, Los Angeles Police Officer Leona Thomas said. She said the infant was playing in the driveway of his home in the 12000 block of Paxton Street about 7:30 p.m. when his father, Jesus Ochoa, 22, began to back out.

“He felt like he ran over something,” Thomas said.

Ochoa pulled the child from under the car and began to drive him to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills. Ochoa was stopped by police, for allegedly speeding, at Glenoaks Boulevard and Hubbard Street. Officers called an ambulance, which took the baby to the hospital. He died from head injuries, Thomas said.

No criminal charges will be filed against the father, Thomas said.
