A nude man believed to be under the influence of drugs died after police struggled with him and shot him twice with a Taser gun, authorities said Monday.

The 26-year-old man, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at Hospital of the Good Samaritan shortly after the Sunday evening incident near McArthur Park, Lt. William Hall said. Officers who struggled with him reported that he appeared to be under the influence of drugs. An autopsy and toxicological tests were ordered.

Police called to the building in the 200 block of South Lafayette Park Place about 8 p.m. were told that the man had punched his girlfriend in the face and had threatened other residents as he ran unclothed up and down hallways, ripping light fixtures off the walls, Hall said.

Officers who went to the man’s third-floor apartment and found him lying naked on the kitchen floor “were unable to get him to comply with their demands to do anything,” Hall said.
