TENNIS ROUNDUP : Cahill Upsets Mayotte in First Round

Australian Darren Cahill upset 14th-seeded Tim Mayotte, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, and Marcus Ondruska eliminated No. 16 Petr Korda, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, in the first round of the $1.3-million Assn. of Tennis Professionals Championship Tuesday at Mason, Ohio.
French Open champion Andres Gomez of Ecuador recovered from a second-set lapse to gain a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Dan Goldie, and second-seeded Andre Agassi, who lost the French Open final to Gomez, advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Richey Reneberg.
In other matches, 10th-seeded Pete Sampras beat David Pate, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, and 15th-seeded Richard Fromberg of Australia downed Czechoslovakia’s Karel Novacek, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Second-seeded Laura Gildemeister of Peru survived a tough match under the scorching sun and defeated Sara Gomer of Britain, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), in a $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Albuquerque, N.M.
In other first-round matches, top-seeded Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia trounced Carrie Cunningham, 6-0, 6-1, and eighth-seeded Anne Minter of Australia overcame Robyn Field of South Africa, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
