Nigeria’s Adeniken Ends Burrell Streak
Olapade Adeniken of Nigeria ended Leroy Burrell’s 12-race winning streak, edging the world’s top-ranked sprinter in the 100 meters at a track meet Tuesday in Malmo, Sweden.
The runners bumped several times before Adeniken fell over the finish line, winning by two-hundredths of a second.
The Nigerian ran a relatively slow 10.10 seconds in beating the American for the first time. He fell hard on the track, but was not injured.
“I got elbowed in the chest a few times when we were running on the line,” said Burrell, who was in the lane next to Adeniken’s. “Every time we hit each other, I lost ground.”
In other events, Randy Barnes won the shotput with a throw of 74 feet 11 1/4 inches, and Hollis Conway won the high jump at 7-9 3/4.
