Schuur’s Weighty Refocus

Share

When Diane Schuur plays the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, Aug. 11, she will present a startlingly different appearance to anyone who has not seen her in the last year or so.

“It’s been a long, hard road,” Schuur says, “but I’ve lost over 100 pounds, and I feel great.”

Her weight loss program has been accompanied by what she describes as a refocusing of priorities and a concentrated effort to get her professional house back in order.

A fractious litigation between Schuur and GRP records, centering on the length of her contract and the quality of the company’s promotional efforts, has finally been resolved to the singer’s satisfaction.

Now the pianist has been back in the studio after a two-year recording hiatus, and is eagerly moving forward with a career that seems back on a firm footing.

“I feel as though I’ve taken a weight off my spirit, as well as my body,” Schuur says. “There’s just as much emotion as ever in my singing, but now that I’m more in touch with myself, it feels as though the music can really fly.”
