Former King Simmer to Coach, Play for Gulls

In need of an assistant coach and players to fill the roster, the expansion San Diego Gulls of the International Hockey League got both when Charlie Simmer signed Wednesday as a player/coach.

Simmer, 36, is a former star forward with the Kings, for whom he led the NHL in scoring with 56 goals in the 1979-80 season. After nine years in the league with the Kings, Cleveland, Boston and Pittsburgh, he has played for a German team the past two years.

TENNIS

Ditta Huber of La Jolla easily advanced to today’s quarterfinals of the U.S. Tennis Assn. girls’ 16s national championships at Morley Field.

Huber, the third-seeded player, defeated Valerie Poulos of Boston, 6-1, 6-1. Huber will meet Tiffany Gates of Grandville, Mich., a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Ali Peshkin of Coral Springs, Fla.

BASEBALL

The San Diego Collegiate Baseball League All-Stars defeated the Fairbanks (Alaska) Goldpanners, 6-4, at SDSU’s Smith Field. Aztec Bill Dunckel, playing for SDSU Coach Jim Dietz in Fairbanks, was three for four with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. There were eight errors.

Dan Nerat of William Penn College pitched two innings, giving up just one hit and striking out two, for the save.

SURFING

Chuy Reyna of Oceanside won two heats to advance to the third round of the Laguna Sportswear pro-am surfing competition at Salt Creek Beach in Laguna Niguel.

Guto Caravilo of San Diego also advanced to today’s third round. The finals are scheduled for 12:45 p.m. Sunday.

GOLF

Polly Hartley of Oceanside lost in the second round of match play at the 90th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Summit, N.J. Hartley was defeated by Martina Koch of Germany, 2 and 1. In the first round, Hartley defeated Dana Arnold of Modesto, 4 and 3.

SAILING

Morgan Larson of Capitola increased his lead over David Houser, a 16-year-old from Coronado, after the second day of the single-handed sailing championships in the O’Day Finals off Point Loma. After six races, Larson leads Houser, 15.5-22.25. The final three races are today beginning at 11:30 a.m.

MEDICAL

The Orthopedic, Arthroscopic and Sports Injury Specialists (OASIS) of San Diego will conduct the first of three low-cost physical examinations for high school athletes in the San Diego Unified School District Saturday at 7 a.m. at the OASIS facility, 8575 Gibbs Dr., Kearny Mesa.

OASIS will also offer similar physicals in January and May for $10. In addition, the group will provide an injury screening clinic each Saturday morning during the 1990 high school football season. For information on times for each school’s physicals, call 279-6615.
