Horsing Around for a Good Cause

What better to do on a warm summer Sunday than horse around for a worthy cause?

Gallop over to the Peters Arabians ranch in Moorpark for the second annual “Horsin’ Around for Help,” a family day that will benefit the Handicapped Equestrian Learning Program.

“We’re expecting to get about 2,500 folks coming out from all over Southern California,” said Pete Peters, who is co-founder of the handicapped program.

The day includes various contests, including a watermelon fest, greased-pig chases, a dunking tank, pony rides, live music and plenty of things to eat.

A drawing will be held for a 6-month-old purebred Arabian colt.

The Handicapped Equestrian Learning Program offers any youngster with a disability the chance to learn horsemanship.

“We teach mentally retarded and all handicapped kids to ride. A lot them participate in Special Olympics and in horse shows,” Peters said.

Actor Jan-Michael Vincent, honorary director of the program, will mingle and sign autographs.

The ranch is at 7155 Walnut Canyon Road. The festivities kick off at 11 a.m. Sunday and will continue through 6 p.m. Admission is free.
