The San Diego Chargers are expected to release running back J. J. Flannigan, the team’s eighth-round draft choice, after Flannigan asked to be cut.

Flannigan had been drafted from the University of Colorado as a running back, but his attempt to make the team stalled when he was switched to wide receiver two weeks ago.

Flannigan did not play in either of San Diego’s two scrimmages or in Saturday night’s exhibition game with Dallas. The Chargers said Flannigan asked to be released so he could catch on as a running back with another team.
