Supervisors Won’t Help Cities Fight Redistricting

Share

Los Angeles County supervisors on Tuesday refused to help a coalition of San Gabriel Valley cities join the court fight to overturn new supervisorial district boundaries.

Supervisor Pete Schabarum was unable to get the support of even his conservative colleagues to allocate $5,000 to $10,000 to help the cities. The cities plan to file a “friend of the court” brief in support of the county’s appeal in the redistricting case.

Supervisor Deane Dana said that if the county provides funding, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will view the brief as a county ploy rather than an independent effort. Mayor Chris Lancaster of Covina said the supervisors’ lack of support was an example of what will happen if the San Gabriel Valley is divided among three supervisors.

The appeals court will hold a hearing Thursday in San Francisco on a lower court’s decision canceling the November runoff between Sarah Flores and Gregory O’Brien in the existing 1st District.
