Two veteran police officers shot and killed a 24-year-old man on Skid Row in Los Angeles on Wednesday when they saw him arguing with another man and pull a knife, investigators said.
Lt. William Hall said officers Ernest Haleck, 38, a 15-year veteran, and Scott Reitz, 37, a 14-year veteran, were cruising by 5th and San Pedro streets in midafternoon when they saw a man confronting Freddy Montalvo, 25, with a knife. The two Metropolitan Division officers leaped from their car, pulled their weapons and fired a total of five shots, Hall said.
He said Haleck and Reitz found a 4-inch steak knife at the scene. Montalvo was not injured.
The name of the dead man, believed to be a transient, was withheld until relatives could be notified.
