A San Diego police officer had sufficient reason to shoot at a suspected armed robber who shot him twice during a chase in May, the district attorney’s staff ruled this week.
Officer John McGill, a five-year veteran of the force, was justified in firing five shots at Steven Lon Nead during a chase May 13, according to a district attorney’s report released by police Thursday.
McGill had chased Nead by car and then on foot after hearing a police dispatch about an armed robbery at a Mission Valley service station. McGill warned Nead to drop his handgun and surrender during a confrontation at a Wabash Avenue apartment complex, the report stated.
Nead did not, but instead shot at McGill, hitting him in the neck and shoulder. McGill fired five shots, all of which missed Nead, the report stated.
Police later caught Nead and charged him with attempted murder and three counts of armed robbery, the report stated.
