California IN BRIEF : OAKLAND : Panel Rejects Garbage Dump Site
The local regional Water Quality Board rejected a long-sought proposal to locate a garbage dump in a scenic Half Moon Bay-area canyon as a threat to water quality. But the 285-acre dump in Apanolio Canyon may still be built because, according to the Army Corps of Engineers, the board’s vote came too late. Lt. Col. Stanley Phernambu said the “clock ran out on that project last April,” when the federal deadline for comments passed. Now, Phernambu said, the board’s rejection of a San Mateo County plan will be only one of the factors in deciding whether a federal permit is issued to build the dump.
