DEL MAR, Calif. — A 16-year-old apprentice jockey was injured when he was thrown by a horse during a workout at the Del Mar Race Track.
Vann Belvoir incurred a minor back injury Thursday and was taken to Scripps Hospital in Encinitas, where he received 10 stitches to close cuts around his mouth, track spokesman Josh Rubinstein said.
Belvoir, who is in his first season at the seaside track, will probably be out for three or four days, said his agent, Scotty McClellan.
It was not known whether the horse, whose identity was not immediately available, would have to be destroyed.
Belvoir was riding the horse in a simulated race when the animal broke its shoulder and fell.
