Anton Voices Optimism on New School Funds
Los Angeles Schools Supt. William R. Anton, facing criticism because the district missed a state deadline for spending $18.7 million on renovating 23 schools, told a Harbor-area gathering that he remains optimistic the money will soon be recovered.
“We don’t know what the final result will be, but we are optimistic,” Anton said Thursday of the district’s plan to safeguard funds for improving overcrowded, older schools.
On Monday, the board is to debate a new district policy that would have planners focus immediately on spending money allocated for renovating schools. The board is expected to authorize its staff to negotiate with the state to recover the money as quickly as possible.
A recent review found that $18.7 million had already been returned to the state because district planners had failed to meet a one-year state deadline.
