Sacramento Educator to Head Compton Schools

J.L. Handy, former assistant superintendent of the Sacramento schools, was named Friday to head the Compton Unified School District. He has a three-year contract and an annual salary of $100,000.

Handy was chosen by trustees of the 26,000-student district after a nationwide search. Among the five finalists for the job was Compton Deputy Supt. Elisa L. Sanchez, who has been acting superintendent for the past seven months. She will return to her post as deputy on Sept. 1, when Handy is to take over.

A graduate of San Jose State University, Handy, 50, received a doctorate in school management from the University of LaVerne in 1987.

He replaces Ted D. Kimbrough, who left Compton in January to become superintendent of schools in Chicago.
