A former Thousand Oaks City Council candidate accused of sending threatening letters to as many as 20 county and city officials entered a plea of not guilty Friday to charges of threatening public officials.

Norman (Blackie) Jackson, 35, who was arraigned in Superior Court, is charged with five counts of sending threatening letters to politicians including County Supervisor Madge L. Schaefer, Assemblyman Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks), Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) and Thousand Oaks City Manager Grant R. Brimhall.

The letters said “the bullets will fly soon,” and were signed “Christ,” authorities said. Jackson, who ran for council in 1988 and 1989, allegedly claimed to be Jesus Christ while running for the council last year.

Jackson, who was arrested in July, remained in Ventura County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

A bail review was set for Aug. 24. The trial was scheduled for Oct. 9.

If he is convicted, he could face a fine of up to $10,000 and up to a year in jail.
