NFL EXHIBITION ROUNDUP : Redskins Hold Off Steelers, 27-24

Monte Coleman returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown and Clarence Vaughn fell on a Steeler fumble in the end zone on the next play from scrimmage as the Washington Redskins beat Pittsburgh, 27-24, in an exhibition Friday night at Washington.

Washington (1-1) held three Steeler quarterbacks to 14 completions in 34 attempts and scored twice within 40 seconds to give the Redskins a 24-10 third-quarter lead.

Pittsburgh (1-1) closed the gap to 24-17 when A.J. Jenkins, who had an interception earlier, returned a fumble 11 yards for a touchdown.

After a field goal by Washington’s Chip Lohmiller, Pittsburgh’s third-string quarterback, Rick Strom, threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Chris Calloway with 48 seconds left for the final score.

It was 17-10 when Pittsburgh’s Dwight Stone dribbled the kickoff and was tackled at the one. Alonzo Mitz knocked the ball loose from running back Barry Foster and it rolled into the end zone, where Vaughn fell on it to give the Redskins a two-touchdown lead.

Jenkins’ return of a fumble by Brian Mitchell made it 24-17, but the Redskins drove to the Pittsburgh 20 on the next series and Lohmiller’s 37-yard field goal gave Washington the winning margin.

Detroit 24, Buffalo 13--Barry Sanders ran for 59 yards and two touchdowns as the Lions beat the Bills at Pontiac, Mich.

The Bills (0-2), who lost to the New York Giants on Monday night, rested quarterback Jim Kelly after the first quarter. He completed only one of three passes for four yards.

Gale Gilbert went the rest of the way at quarterback for Buffalo, hitting 23 of 29 for 234 yards and two touchdowns.

Bob Gagliano got his first start for Detroit. He completed five of 12 for 64 yards. Rodney Peete took over and led the Lions to scores on three consecutive possessions. He completed four of seven passes for 75 yards and ran for a touchdown.

Seattle 13, Indianapolis 10--Rookie free agent Derek Loville scored on a one-yard run with 4:54 left to give the Seahawks a victory at Seattle.

Quarterback Jeff George, the first player taken in the NFL draft this year, made his first start for the Colts (0-2) and completed 11 of 18 passes for 134 yards. When he left the game in the third quarter, Indianapolis was ahead, 7-3.

Loville, Oregon’s all-time leader in rushing yards and points scored, rushed for 35 yards on the Seahawks’ 12-play, 75-yard game-winning touchdown drive.
