‘Jailhouse Rock’ Writers Sue Universal: The composers of the Elvis Presley hit “Jailhouse Rock” sued Universal Pictures for copyright infringement for using the song in the comedy “The Blues Brothers.” In their federal court suit, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller said they wrote “Jailhouse Rock” in 1957 and “assigned the initial term of copyright ownership” to Elvis Presley Music Inc. They assert that they had regained the rights to “Jailhouse Rock” in 1986, when Universal put the song into the movie without authorization. The suit seeks to stop Universal from further alleged infringement and demands unspecified profits and damages. (Filed Aug. 14, 1990. Case No. 90-4342).
