James C. Dobson, who founded the Christian media empire Focus on the Family, has been hospitalized after suffering what officials of his organization called a “mild to moderate” heart attack.

Paul L. Hetrick, vice president of the nonprofit, Pomona-based Focus on the Family, said Dobson, 54, will remain at a Pasadena hospital for tests until the end of the week. Dobson, who regularly plays basketball with friends, experienced chest pains during a game and drove himself to the hospital.

Dobson is the author of 11 books on family living and host of a radio program heard on 1,450 stations.
