SIDELINES : U.S. Overwhelms East Germany

BEIJING —
The United States defeated East Germany, 3-0, today in the first round of the World Women’s Volleyball Championship in Shenyang, China.
The Americans won, 15-4, 15-13, 15-8.
Sixteen teams divided into four groups are playing preliminary rounds in Beijing, Shenyang and Shanghai. The finals will be held Sept. 2 in Beijing.
