In two unrelated incidents that occurred within an hour of each other, two undocumented immigrant girls from Mexico were raped Tuesday night, a police spokesman said.

Both victims were taken to Children’s Hospital in San Diego for treatment, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

In the first attack, a 17-year-old girl was sexually assaulted about 10:30 p.m. in an area known as Goat Canyon at the west end of Monument Road near the U.S.-Mexico border. She was traveling with two men when they were approached by a Latino man who had a knife and a gun and demanded money, Robinson said.

Not satisfied with what the group gave him, the man forced the girl to strip, inflicted a minor knife wound to her back and raped her, Robinson said.

About an hour later, an 11-year-old girl was raped by another Latino man in his 30s, Robinson said. The girl had been traveling with her mother and brother on foot in the 400 block of West San Ysidro Boulevard when they were approached by a man, who took the girl across Interstate 5 and raped her.

That man is described as about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 150 pounds. He was wearing a burgundy sweater over a gray shirt.

San Diego police are investigating both attacks.
