Airline Fined $101,050 for Pollution Violations
Continental Airlines was fined $101,050 Wednesday after pleading no contest to violating air pollution laws by improperly handling ozone-depleting chemicals at an airport maintenance facility.
The airline also was placed on three years’ informal probation by Municipal Judge Susan Isacoff. The airline pleaded no contest to 20 health and safety code violations of South Coast Air Quality Management District rules.
Deputy City Atty. Teresa Lujan said violations were discovered during inspections last year at the Continental facility at Los Angeles International Airport where airplanes are stripped and repainted. The fines were the third highest assessed in an environmental case prosecuted by City Atty. James K. Hahn’s office.
