REASON TO BELIEVE: Rod Stewart, who inaugurated the first Commitment to Life program, will be back Sept. 7 as one of the headliners of the fourth annual Commitment to Life concert, which raises money for AIDS Project Los Angeles. The benefit performance, held at the Wiltern Theatre, will also feature Whoopi Goldberg, Sarah Brightman, Joshua Bell, Angela Lansbury and Bobcat Goldthwait. . . . Chrysalis Records has signed ex-Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins, whose debut album will be called “Fast Food for Thoughts.” . . . Post-punk faves Soul Asylum are also due back over at A&M; with a new album, titled “Soul Asylum and the Horse They Rode In On.” . . . And MTV has already lined up the likes of a re-formed New Edition and Madonna (hoping to rebound from her disastrous European tour) to perform at the video channel’s 1990 Video Music Awards Sept. 6, held at the Universal Amphitheatre. But the real news is that MTV has made a cozy advertising deal with seven eager youth-oriented companies. (What would a rock event be these days without a corporate sponsor?) Pepsi will sponsor the Viewers Choice Awards. Taco Bell is doing a series of commemorative soft-drink cups. But our fave? As a show sponsor, Volkswagen will display its new-model autos in the Amphitheatre lobby and courtyard.
