The Simi Valley PTA Council has been honored by the California State PTA as the most outstanding in the state for the 1989-90 academic year.

Council President Janice DiFatta said she and the council’s 20 board members were “beside themselves” after learning they had been selected from about 200 councils statewide.

“It’s really an honor to have been considered for the award and then to receive it,” DiFatta said.

The council has about 10,000 members in 24 units. DiFatta said her organization caught the attention of the judges with a wide menu of policies and programs. The council created a program to educate parents about substance abuse, work habits, teen-age pregnancy and suicide.

The council also devised an incentive scheme where points are awarded to PTA units based on the number of activities and projects undertaken, reports put out, and attendance at Simi Valley Council and district meetings.

The Simi Valley PTA Council was also the state’s most outstanding in 1983.
