$2.4 Million Donated for Cancer Research

Revlon/UCLA Women’s Cancer Research Program has received a $2.4-million gift from the Revlon Foundation to the UCLA School of Medicine to support research and treatment of principal forms of women’s cancers, said Dr. Kenneth I. Shine, dean of the medical school. The focus of research will be on breast and ovarian cancers, which account for one-third of all cancers in women.

* YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles has received a three-year $5-million grant from the Weingart Foundation to assist inner-city youth and families. The Weingart grant will enable some 2,800 schoolchildren and their parents to participate in low-cost, developmentally oriented child-care programs. Activities will be conducted at YMCA preschools and after-school “latchkey” centers.

* Braille Institute has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation to support expansion of services and facilities. The grant will provide an increase in the Braille and large-print materials available through the institute’s press department and improve the availability of recorded books available through library services.

* The Global Fund for Women has been awarded a $400,000 three-year grant by the Chicago-based John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The Global Fund is the only U.S.-based foundation exclusively concerned with assisting women’s groups worldwide. Since the fund’s inception three years ago, it has provided $450,400 in assistance to 115 such groups.

* United Friends of the Children received a $50,000 donation at a private 10th anniversary celebrity chefs charity event hosted Aug. 22 by Infiniti, a division of Nissan Motor. UFC is a nonprofit support group for MacLaren Children’s Center. Bill Bruce, vice president, general manager of Infiniti Division, presented the donation during the event at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Laguna Niguel.

* Cal State L.A./Lincoln High School “University Preparatory Program” has been awarded $75,000 by Metropolitan Life Foundation through its College-School Partners program. The innovative four-year project allows Lincoln High School students to sign and fulfill a contract to complete specific college preparatory courses. Participants are ensured of admission to the college upon graduation.

* Theatre for Children Endowment Fund received more than $20,000 from the Friends of the Assistance League of Southern California Nine O’Clock Players.
