Colorful Polynesian dancing groups, some from 5,000 miles away and others from just around the corner in the South Bay, will be performing Monday in a Los Angeles Festival show in San Pedro. Dancers from the islands of Wallis and Futuna, whose closest neighbors are Samoa and Fiji, will be performing in the United States for the first time, said Judith Mitoma, co-curator of the festival. The dancers “are really vibrant and beautiful,” said Mitoma, who saw them in Australia two years ago. The dancers from Wallis and Futuna will kick off the program on the Pacific Stage in Angels Gate Park at noon. The Halau O’Kekuhi dancers, from Hilo, Hawaii, also will be performing. Joining the visiting troupes from abroad will be dancing groups from local Pacific island communities: the Tongan Friendly Islanders, many of whom are from Ingelwood, and the United Samoan Church Youth Group from Carson. Admission to the show, scheduled to last until 6 p.m., is free.
