Ty Detmer completed 33 of 46 passes for 387 yards and one touchdown and ran for two more to lead No. 16 Brigham Young to a 30-10 victory over Texas El Paso Saturday night at El Paso, Tex., in a Western Athletic Conference game dominated by penalties.

Twenty-five penalties were assessed for 248 yards, including three stemming from a third-quarter brawl that brought the UTEP bench to the Cougar sideline. UTEP tackle Lorenzo Constantini and BYU running back Matt Bellini were ejected after the brawl.

Holding penalties in the first and third quarters brought back two apparent BYU touchdowns. The Cougars were hit with 19 penalties for 169 yards.

Oklahoma State 10, Tulsa 3--Oklahoma State’s defense, which had been victimized by Tulsa quarterback T.J. Rubley in three previous games, turned in an outstanding performance at Stillwater, Okla., to ensure the victory.

The Cowboys held Tulsa to 159 yards. Rubley, who had thrown for 888 yards and six touchdowns in his career against Oklahoma State, completed 12 of 28 passes for 83 yards and was intercepted twice.

Cowboy running back Gerald Hudson gained 148 yards in 33 carries and scored the game’s only touchdown on a nine-yard run in the third quarter. Hudson’s touchdown run capped a five-play, 46-yard drive in which he carried three times for 26 yards. The short drive was set up by a defensive stand after punter Cary Blanchard had pinned Tulsa at its three-yard line.

Rice 33, Wake Forest 17--Trevor Cobb scored two touchdowns and became the first Rice running back since 1988 to gain more than 100 yards as the Owls coasted at Houston.

Cobb, who gained 175 yards in 30 carries, scored on a 38-yard run on Rice’s first possession. His performance was the best by an Owl since Richard Williams gained 101 yards against Texas A&M; on Oct. 22, 1988.

Rice quarterback Donald Hollas, who ranked 12th nationally in total offense last season, completed his first eight passes and finished 15 of 24 for 201 yards.
