NFL EXHIBITION ROUNDUP : Pinkett’s Scores Lead Oilers Past Cowboys, 27-6

Allen Pinkett caught a touchdown pass and ran for another score Saturday night, and the Houston Oilers gave Coach Jack Pardee his first NFL victory with a 27-6 decision over the Dallas Cowboys at Irving, Tex.

Houston (1-3) put Dallas (1-3) away with 17 fourth-quarter points, including a 52-yard field goal by Tony Zendejas, an eight-yard scoring run by Pinkett, and Cody Carlson’s a 14-yard touchdown pass to Pinkett.

The Cowboys had cut Houston’s lead to 10-6 early in the third period on Ken Willis’ 27-yard field goal after a breakdown in the Oilers’ punt team. Dallas took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 39-yard field goal by Willis.

The Oilers took the lead for good on Warren Moon’s 11-yard screen pass to Lorenzo White that went for a touchdown in the second quarter, and Zendejas added a 37-yard field goal to make it 10-3 at halftime.

A crowd of 55,499 watched the annual battle between Texas’ professional teams for the Governor’s Cup. Dallas’ lead in the series dropped to 16-8.

New York Giants 28, Cleveland 10--Rookie Rodney Hampton caught one of Phil Simms’ two touchdown passes and ran 11 yards for another to lead the Giants past the Browns at East Rutherford, N.J.

Linebacker Steve DeOssie also returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown as the Giants (4-0) handed the Browns (1-4) their third consecutive loss.

Hampton, who left the University of Georgia after his junior year, continued to impress in his effort to move ahead of veterans Ottis Anderson and Joe Morris and second-year pro Lewis Tillman. He has scored four touchdowns in the exhibition season.

Simms, who completed 12 of 18 for 210 yards, hit Mark Ingram on a nine-yard scoring pass play to give New York a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Pittsburgh 20, Philadelphia 10--Bubby Brister threw for one touchdown and set up another with a 45-yard completion to Weegie Thompson, and the Steelers used three turnovers by the Eagles to win at Pittsburgh.

Brister, playing three quarters, completed 11 of 28 passes for 142 yards and an 18-yard scoring pass to Louis Lipps to give the Steelers a 7-0 lead.
