CHICAGO — Reluctant Guest broke a 31-year Arlington course record Saturday in winning the $500,000 Beverly D with a brilliant stretch run.
An outsider in the 12-horse field, Reluctant Guest took the lead from Lady Winner nearing the wire for a half-length victory in the world’s richest race for fillies and mares.
The winning filly, ridden by Robbie Davis, paid $31, $11 and $8.60 after racing the 1 3/16 miles on the grass in 1:51 1/5, to break by one-fifth of a second the record set by Round Table under 132 pounds in 1959.
Lady Winner, ridden by Kent Desormeaux, finished second, 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Royal Touch and Gary Stevens.
