Bonds Are Posted by 11 Challengers for America’s Cup
Eleven America’s Cup challengers in nine countries posted $150,000 performance bonds by the deadline of midnight Monday, making it likely the next competition, sailed off San Diego in 1992, will be the most international ever, the America’s Cup Organizing Committee said.
Three other syndicates--two from the Soviet Union and one from West Germany--have requested deadline extensions. The Challenger of Record Committee will meet Sept. 15 in Australia to determine whether the clubs will be allowed to sail in the competition, to be contested for the first time in new 75-foot America’s Cup class yachts.
The record for most challenging countries is six for the 1986-87 off Freemantle, Australia.
Challengers who met the deadline are:
Royal Sydney Yacht Club (Australia), Darling Harbour Yacht Club (Australia), Port Pendennis Yacht Club) (England), Yacht Club de France-Sete (France), Compagnia Della Vela (Italy), Bengal Bay Boating Club (Japan), Nippon Ocean Racing Club (Japan), Mercury Bay Boating Club (New Zealand), Monte-Real Club de Yates del Bayone (Spain), Stanungsbaden Yacht Club (Sweden) and Yacht Club Galeb (Yugoslavia).
