San Clemente’s Melhado Advances at Surfing Meet

Danny Melhado of San Clemente won his third-round heat Wednesday to advance in the $100,000 Body Glove surfing competition at Lower Trestles in Camp Pendleton.

Melhado, an amateur who won the Op junior competition in August, edged Josh Loya of Santa Cruz, Heath Hemmings of San Diego and Mark Taylor of Santa Cruz. Loya, who finished second, also advanced to the next round.

Cordell Miller of Laguna Niguel advanced to today’s fourth round with a second-place finish in his heat.
