After the potential game-winning hit turned into a bizarre double-play in the bottom of the 21st inning of the California League’s championship series opener, League President Joe Gagliardi decided to call it a night.

Wednesday’s opener of the Class A best-of-5 series between the Bakersfield Dodgers and the Stockton Ports was suspended after five hours, 57 minutes with the score tied 3-3. It is the third-longest game in California League history and will tie for the second-longest once it resumes today at 6 p.m.

The longest game in league history was a 23-inning affair on Aug. 31, 1966, in which Reno defeated Lodi 6-5.

Frank Humber took over for Dodgers reliever Rich Crane after he got into trouble with one out in the bottom of the 21st when James Tatum singled and moved up on Bo Dodson’s walk.

Kenny Jackson followed with a single. Tatum tried to score but was thrown out by Dodgers center fielder Mark Griffin. Catcher Bryan Barr then threw to third, nailing Dodson.

Bakersfield had 11 hits and left 16 men on base. Stockton rapped out 16 hits and stranded 22 runners. The Dodgers played errorless baseball while the Ports committed two errors.

When the game was called, just 150 fans remained from the announced crowd of 1,497 at Billy Hebert Field.
