The Chicano Movement, Then and Now
While reading the article by Gloria J. Romero (“Derailed Then, Make History Now,” Commentary, Aug. 31) I thought of a different approach on how to make history as Chicanos.
The adults should take an active role in their kids’ upbringing. We should teach the basic values to our children. This way the Chicano youths will learn to respect the authorities, and we won’t have to worry about police brutality.
We could involve our youngsters in the programs that are available in the local parks.
Finally, regardless of your ethnic group, education will be the key for our future. Romero says that “unequal justice consumes too much of our time”; she should turn her “organizing, spirit and energy,” into finding out the causes of the large number of Mexican-American high school dropouts and the small percentage of college graduates.
Our struggle can be won by taking advantage of the opportunities available to us.
