Sawallisch to Philly: German impresario Wolfgang Sawallisch, whose association with the Philadelphia Orchestra dates back 24 years, Wednesday was named musical director of the orchestra. Sawallisch, director of Germany’s Bavarian State Opera in Munich, will take over the podium in the 1993-94 season. He replaces Riccardo Muti, who will end a 12-year reign with the Philadelphia Orchestra after the 1992 season.
