The county Public Works Department has begun a “4/40” workweek for 47% of its 3,400 full-time employees based in Alhambra. The move, which is designed to cut air pollution and traffic congestion, is expected to save about 77,000 gallons of gasoline and keep 27 tons of pollutants per year out of the air by reducing employee work trips by 20%, officials said. Under the program, which began Monday, about 1,600 county employees will work 10 hours a day, Monday through Thursday.

This brings to 3,200 the number of county employes working a “4/40 schedule. This program is expected to save taxpayers an estimated $1.7 million annually by reducing the number of sick days and reducing building operating costs, since the the building will be closed on Fridays.
