Several Areas Released From Medfly Quarantine

Share

The federal government on Thursday lifted an agricultural quarantine imposed on several parts of the Los Angeles area in response to the Mediterranean fruit fly infestation.

It was the second time in six weeks that the quarantine area has been reduced. State and federal officials have been battling the fruit-destroying pest for more than a year and are now optimistic that they have won the battle.

Sections of the Los Angeles area were first quarantined on Aug. 23, 1989. Shipments of produce that could harbor a pest are restricted unless the material is inspected or proven to be safe.

The quarantine was lifted Thursday from the Lynwood and South Gate areas of Los Angeles County, plus the San Fernando Valley and areas east to Azusa. The quarantine in the northern section of Anaheim in Orange County also was lifted. Quarantines in other areas of Southern California remain in effect.
