PREP FOOTBALL SPOTLIGHT : FACTS, FIGURES AND COMMENTS FROM THIS WEEK’S GAMES : DAZZLING DEBUT

It didn’t take long for quarterback John Walsh to make his mark at Carson. In his first game as a Colt, the transfer from West Torrance set school records for most completions (20) and passing yards (375) in a game, as Carson defeated Bishop Amat, 37-26, at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

Afterward, Walsh seemed to get caught up in the excitement. “I was hoping to get 400 (yards),” he said. “We can’t be stopped, and we won’t be stopped.”

Coach Gene Vollnogle congratulated Walsh after the game and told him, “Welcome to Carson.” Like everyone else, he was impressed. “I think he’s every bit as good as he’s been in practice,” Vollnogle said. “I think he’s excellent. He proved tonight that he can take the pressure, he can take the big rush coming after him. I thought he was a good leader on the field. He took charge.”

Interestingly, Walsh wears No. 7, the same number Perry Klein wore for Carson in 1988 after he transferred from Palisades. Asked how he picked that number, Walsh replied: “They gave it to me, I didn’t pick it.”

BOWLING FOR YARDS

George Felactu, a 5-foot-8, 216-pound running back for Palos Verdes, is nicknamed Brunswick, after the bowling ball. Friday night, Felactu treated North Torrance’s defenders like pins, rushing for 230 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries to lead the Sea Kings to a 32-0 victory.

Despite his size, Felactu is Palos Verdes’ fastest back, with 4.7-second speed in the 40-yard dash. “He’s no slow poke,” said Sea King Coach Bill Judy. “On a couple of plays, somebody would hit him and he’d lower his shoulder and keep going. He just bounced off.”

Said North Coach Joe Austin: “We didn’t play their attack right, but (Felactu) is very good. Give him a seam, and he’s gone.”

MISGUIDED YOUTH

Narbonne would have been shut out Friday night if it wasn’t for a bit of confused running by Kennedy defensive back Bobby Rogers. The Gauchos scored their only points in a 36-2 loss when Rogers intercepted a pass and ran 82 yards the wrong way to Kennedy’s end zone for a safety. Rogers, who was playing in his first varsity game, was hit as he made the interception and got turned in the wrong direction.

THE NAME FITS

El Segundo defensive back T.D. Mayer returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal a 15-6 victory over Laguna Beach.

ONE-MAN GANG

Carson’s Abdul Muhammad was everywhere against Bishop Amat, finishing with 272 total yards. The 6-foot, 168-pound senior returned two kickoffs for 112 yards, including a 98-yard touchdown; returned one punt for 49 yards; caught eight passes for 88 yards, lost two yards rushing and returned an interception 25 yards. He has three kickoff returns for TDs in his career, one short of the school record.

ALL OR NOTHING

After two games, Hawthorne wide receiver Tarrick Brock has a modest total of four catches. But three have been for touchdowns. Thursday night, Brock’s leaping 19-yard scoring reception from quarterback Jamil Williams with 4:01 remaining lifted the Cougars to a 20-17 victory over Santa Ana. He had two catches, both for TDs, last week against Antelope Valley.

GETTING DEFENSIVE

Redondo made life miserable for South Torrance quarterback Andy Zinniger, sacking him four times and intercepting three of his passes in a 20-7 victory. Joey Zeller clinched the game when he scored on a 71-yard interception return with 2:16 remaining.

TURNAROUNDS

--Rolling Hills, held to 112 yards rushing last week in a 28-9 loss to Mary Star, gained 299 yards on the ground in a 41-0 victory over Centennial. All-CIF running back Robert Coulter led the way with 183 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, after being held to 36 yards on 12 tries last week.

--Torrance, which lost, 35-24, last week to Santa Barbara, rallied to beat Morningside, 13-12, on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jason Kendall to Carlos Hilliard and a point-after kick by Scott Hagerman with 5:05 remaining.

STREAKS

Inglewood defeated Verbum Dei, 13-6, to snap a 19-game losing streak. The Sentinels had not won since beating Mira Costa, 19-7, on Nov. 13, 1987.

West Torrance beat Mira Costa, 28-16, for its 11th consecutive regular-season victory.

Bishop Montgomery fell to Los Altos, 16-6, extending its losing streak to eight games.

Banning fell to Long Beach Poly, 7-6, extending its losing streak to five games.

IN QUOTES

Bishop Montgomery Coach Steve Carroll, after his team committed four turnovers for the second consecutive week in a 16-6 loss to Los Altos: “We mistaked it away. It’s getting old. I wish I had an answer for it. I don’t know if there’s a solution. I know it happens. You just hope it doesn’t happen in bunches and not at inopportune times.”

Palos Verdes Coach Bill Judy, finding humor in the fact that his team rushed for 323 yards and passed for 0 in a 32-0 victory over North Torrance: “(Quarterback Tim) King was 0-for-14, with no interceptions.”

Morningside defensive back John Cotton, after dropping a pass on Torrance’s game-winning drive in a 13-12 loss: “It was mine. I just lost concentration. It should have ended that drive. It was nothing but me and the sideline. I could have taken it all the way back.”

Carson Coach Gene Vollnogle, after his team’s 37-26 victory over Bishop Amat: “If you would have asked me off the cuff before the game, I would have said we were going to score 40 points. I told (the players) we could score 40 points if we play the way we’re capable of playing.”

Leuzinger Coach Steve Carnes, on Paramount running back Leon Neal, who ran for two 85-yard touchdowns but gained only three yards on six other carries in a 27-13 Paramount victory: “We played really well. It was just that damn running back. We shut him down, and then he’d break a big one.”

INJURIES

Bishop Montgomery tailback Joe McEwen suffered a deep bruise on his right forearm. Coach Carroll said McEwen is “day-to-day” and questionable for next week’s game against Mira Costa.

South Torrance defensive end Mike Petrucelli left in the third quarter with a possible broken toe.

Mira Costa tight end-defensive end Scott Letourneau suffered a neck injury in a 28-16 loss to West Torrance. A spokesperson for Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, where Letourneau was taken, said the player was treated for neck and back strain and was released.
