On the Town (Channel 9 Sunday at 1 p.m.): Three sailors (Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin) on a one-day leave in Manhattan. This 1949 MGM classic was directed by Kelly and Stanley Donen and based on the Betty Comden-Adolph Green-Leonard Bernstein musical. (2:00)
The Diary of a Chambermaid (Bravo Monday at 8 p.m., again at 1 a.m.): Luis Bunuel found in Octave Mirbeau’s 1900 novel--which had been filmed in 1946 to far different effect by Jean Renoir--the opportunity for a characteristic blast at bourgeois morality and the evils of fascism (the film is set in 1930). Boyfriends and Girlfriends (Bravo Thursday at 11 p.m.): A 1987 gem from Eric Rohmer in which four young lovers at cross-purposes sort themselves out against the stark Paris satellite city of Cergy Pontoise. (1:42)
Salt of the Earth (Channel 28 Saturday at 10:30 p.m.): This taut, moving 1953 blacklisted film, directed by Herbert J. Biberman and written by Michael Wilson, was based on a 1951 zinc miners’ strike in Silver City, N.M. (1:30)
