NEWPORT BEACH : Clinic to Be Offered on Free Fishing Day

Share

Youths and adults who want to try fishing without the expense of a license can attend a Free Fishing Day celebration Saturday at Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve.

Throughout the state, people will be allowed to fish that day at any public waterway without a license. It is an effort by the California Fish and Game Department to draw more people to the sport and promote respect for the state’s resources.

As part of the Free Fishing Day activities at Newport Bay, a state marine biologist will teach beginning fishers the basics, including casting, knot tying and hook baiting.

Anglers are urged to bring their own gear, but loaner tackle will be provided. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Shellmaker Island area near the entrance to the ecological reserve. For more information, call (714) 640-6746.

The county’s other creeks and lakes may not offer similar clinics, but anglers can still legally fish there Saturday without a license.
