A private investigator has testified that former major league manager Billy Martin was driving when his pickup truck went out of control on Christmas Day 1989 and smashed into a culvert, killing Martin.

His companion that night, Detroit bar owner William Reedy, is on trial in Town of Fenton Court, Port Crane, N.Y., for driving while intoxicated, but he has maintained that Martin was behind the wheel.

William Fischer said his examination of the truck on the morning after the accident showed several signs that Martin, not Reedy, was driving.

Dr. Irwin J. Rosenberg, an orthopedic surgeon who treated Reedy immediately after the crash, testified that Reedy’s injuries--a dislocated right hip and fractures of the hip and ribs--were more consistent with those suffered by passengers than drivers.
