PARIS —
Top seed Conchita Martinez of Spain downed France’s Karine Quentrec, 6-1, 6-3, today in the first round of the Paris Women’s Open.
Martinez, ranked 10th in the world, will face Nathalie Herreman of France in the second round Wednesday. Herreman eliminated Sybille Niox-Chateau of France, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Last year’s winner, second-seeded Sandra Cecchini of Italy, ousted Belgium’s Sandra Wasserman, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
