Drawing Helms: Artist Robbie Conal will not be alone in using representations of Sen. Jesse Helms (R, N.C.) in his work. The senator is the subject for the National Portrait Competition sponsored by the Broadway Arts Building in Asheville, N.C. First prize is a one-week vacation on Kiawah Island in South Carolina. The entry fee is $15, and the drawing is due at the gallery on 49 Broadway, Asheville, N.C. 28801 on Oct. 21. Warning: a representative from Helms’ office will be one of the judges.
