Wilbur D. Carney; Retired Operating Engineer

Wilbur D. Carney, a retired heavy construction equipment operator, has died at his Van Nuys home. He was 71.

A resident of Van Nuys since 1946, Carney died Friday of heart failure, said his daughter, Elaine Louise McDaniel.

Born Dec. 5, 1918, in Caldwell, Ida., he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army’s 130th Field Artillery Service Battalion during World War II. In the early 1950s, he went to work for the Krist Construction Co. in Altadena as an operating engineer, working with heavy equipment. He retired in 1976.

Carney had been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars lodge in Burbank and the Moose lodges in Burbank and Canyon Country.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susanna Carney; daughters Elaine Louise McDaniel of Las Vegas, Arlene Sue Hanson of Victorville and Beverly Jean Jerden of Eugene, Ore.; brothers Lee Carney of Cascade, Ida., and Calvin Carney of Caldwell, Ida.; sisters Mary Bischoff of Van Nuys, Helen Sarratt of Rimforest, Calif., and Bernice VanAtta of Albany, Ore.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Oakwood Memorial Park Chapel, 22601 Lassen St. in Chatsworth, with burial to follow. Bastian & Perrott Mortuary in Northridge is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Carney’s name to the American Diabetes Assn. or the National Kidney Foundation.
