Rader Deal Is Said to Be Delayed Because He Wants Two-Year Contract

Share

An agreement that would secure the return of Manager Doug Rader for 1991 has been delayed because Rader is seeking a multiyear contract--believed to be two years--and General Manager Mike Port has not received authorization from owner Gene Autry to approve a two-year deal, a club source said.

Rader was hired under a one-year contract Nov. 14, 1988, and last summer received an extension through this season. The club source confirmed that Rader believes two years is the amount of time he needs to properly shape a team that probably will undergo several personnel changes this winter.

Port said last week the matter could be settled before the end of this home stand, but tonight’s game is the Angels’ last at Anaheim Stadium before they travel to Kansas City and Texas for six games, and an agreement does not appear imminent.

Rader has commented only sparingly on his situation. “Everything is status quo,” Rader said Tuesday. “There’s nothing new to report.”
