Synagogues Plan Services for Jewish High Holy Days

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, will be celebrated at synagogues and temples in the South Bay today and Friday.

The holiday marks the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days, which end at sundown Sept. 29 with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

* Temple Rodeph Shalom of El Segundo will hold Rosh Hashanah services in the Santa Barbara Room at the Hacienda Hotel, 525 Sepulveda Blvd., El Segundo, today at 10 a.m. and Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Kol Nidre services on the eve of Yom Kippur will be at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 28. Services for Yom Kippur begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 29, and continue throughout the day. Rabbi Leon Kahane will officiate.

Non-members may purchase tickets for participation in all services for $100 per person. Tickets may be obtained by calling 322-4494 or at the door.

Kol Nidre is a special service asking God to cancel vows made to oneself or God, so believers may begin anew.

* Temple Menorah, 1101 Camino Real, Redondo Beach, will hold Rosh Hashanah services today at 10 a.m. Services for families and preschool children will be held today at 4 p.m. At 5 p.m. today, a Tashlich service will be held at another location. Tashlich is the symbolic casting of one’s sins into the water, enabling one to start the new year cleansed.

Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. A Shabbat Shuvah (Sabbath of Repentence) service will be held at 8:15 p.m. Friday.

Kol Nidre will be observed Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m.

On Sept. 29, Yom Kippur services will be held as follows: for families and preschoolers, 9:30 a.m.; main service and a service for schoolchildren, 11 a.m.; meditations of the heart, 1:30 p.m.; afternoon service, 2:30 p.m.; Yizkor, the memorial services for those who have died, 4:30 p.m.

* Temple Beth-El, 1435 W. 7th St., San Pedro, has scheduled Rosh Hashanah services at 9:30 a.m. today. Regular Sabbath services will be held Friday evening. Services will also be held at 8 p.m. Sept. 28. On Yom Kippur, Sept. 29, services will commence at 9:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day. For information and tickets, call 833-2467.

* Southwest Temple Beth Torah, 1472 Gramercy Place, Gardena, holds Rosh Hashanah services at 9 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. today, and at 9 a.m. on Friday.

Kol Nidre will be observed at 7 p.m. Sept. 28. On Yom Kippur, Sept. 29, Yizkor services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tickets covering all services are $50 a seat for non-members. Tickets for adult children or parents of members are $25 and student tickets are $10.

* Congregation Ner Tamid, 5721 Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes, will hold services at several locations. For tickets and locations of services, call 377-6986.

Rosh Hashanah services will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. today, and at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 28, and beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 29. Tickets covering all services are $250 for non-members. Tickets for extended families of temple members are $30. Students and servicemen are free. No one will be turned away.

* Congregation Tifereth Jacob, 2617 Bell Ave., Manhattan Beach, will hold Rosh Hashanah services at 8:30 a.m. today and Friday. A Tashlich service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Manhattan Beach Pier.

Kol Nidre will be observed at 6 p.m. Sept. 28. Yom Kippur services will be held Sept. 29 between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m.

Rabbi David Gordis and Rabbi Mark Hyman will officiate at the services with Cantor Jerry Janoff. Tickets for non-members are $150 for all services and $90 for extended family members. For information and tickets, call 379-0196 or 379-8661.
