James D. Flora; Engineering Consultant

James D. Flora, an engineering consultant specializing in magnetics, has died at his North Hollywood home. He was 66.

A resident of North Hollywood since 1969, Flora died Sunday of cancer, said his brother Eugene Flora.

Born Dec. 5, 1923, in Spangler, Pa., Flora served in the Navy for three years during World War II. He came to California in 1951 and worked at Lockheed Corp. in Burbank. Flora later earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Santa Clara University and a doctorate degree in physics from USC.

During the 1970s, Flora had his own engineering business in North Hollywood, but later closed it and worked for various Southern Californian companies as an engineering consultant specializing in magnetics.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Catherine Flora; brothers Eugene Flora of Santa Clara, Calif., and Frank Flora of Red Bluff, Calif.; and sister Marie Hershman of Corning, Calif.

A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 6160 Cartwright Ave. in North Hollywood. Burial will be in New York. Pierce Brothers Valhalla Mortuary in North Hollywood is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Flora’s name to the American Cancer Society, San Fernando Valley unit.
